It’s time of the year when food and candy in many parts of the world turns towards Halloween. People get busy with activities that are centred around things scary, ghoulish and strangely fun. It’s two days to Halloween and if you’re looking for last minute easy treats to make at home, I’ll show you a few. It doesn’t get better than these Easy 3 Ingredient Halloween Treats. All you need are Oreo Cookies, chocolate buttons like Gems, Smarties or M&Ms, and a little bit of dark chocolate.
We don’t celebrate Halloween as it’s not an Indian tradition. I used to make Halloween treats for the daughter every year for her to share with friends at school. She’s away at University in the UK this year, far from home. So I had made no plans for anything Halloween-ish at all.
Then yesterday, she called late at night all excited about Halloween. Apparently, her college organized a trick-and-treat for the children of the married students there. Many of them are American and they didn’t want their children to miss out on Halloween festivities and fun. So a few students, including my daughter, volunteered to hand out candy to all the little trick-and-treaters who came knocking at the student houses. I’m not sure who had more fun, the little children or my daughter!
That got me into a semi-Halloween mood. The question was what to make given the lack of time and material to work with. Since Halloween isn’t that big here, I don’t have a very wide variety of raw material to work with. Two things I can almost always lay my hands on are Oreo cookies, and Gems (coloured chocolate buttons like Smarties and M&Ms). I also used a little melted dark chocolate as “glue”.
So here’s how to make these Easy 2 Ingredients Oreo Bats. They’re colourful and cute. They need no recipe as this just involves a bit of assembly. Putting them together takes about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how many you’re making. I would love to tell you that these were ideas I came up with. The truth is that they’re not. I came across the ideas on the net that inspired to create something similar with the ingredients I had.
You will need Oreos for this naturally. I used their Choco Crème flavour because the light brown coloured cream filling makes a good contrast background for the “bats”. Split each cookie in half so one cookie has the cream on it and the other doesn’t. Break the one without the cream exactly into half. These form the “ears”. Place the ears as shown in the photograph “glueing” them with a little melted chocolate. Similarly fix on the coloured chocolate buttons for “eyes”. That’s all and you have Oreo Bats for Halloween.
These are a little delicate so they’re best to make and serve for a party. They obviously don’t transport very well. Making the Oreo Bats is also a fun activity to do with kids.
